After an absence of 64 years: women return to the Streif
26.01.2025

Women competed regularly in Kitzbühel between 1932 and 1961. They are set to return on 8th and 9th March 2025 for the Europacup with two Super-G races on the Streif.

Organisers of the Hahnenkamm Races keep a watchful eye on Europacup happenings, the league below the World Cup. Only a few days ago, a new racetrack on Mount Resterkogel at Pass Thurn celebrated its successful premiere and hosted the Men’s Europacup on 13th, 16th, and 17th January, with a Super-G and two Downhill races. Conditions were excellent, thus paving the way for a future with regular races from the 2025/2026 season onwards. The speed track – located in the border region between Tyrol and Salzburg – was created in collaboration with Ski Austria and Bergbahn Kitzbühel Cable Car Co.

Kitzbühel Ski Club spontaneously seized the opportunity to host an open date for the Women’s Europacup. Two Super-Gs will take place on the Streif on 8th and 9th March. The international women’s sporting world is thus finally returning to Mount Hahnenkamm – 64 years after its last appearance. The ladies competed regularly at races in Kitzbühel between 1932 and 196, where Traudl Hecher frequently demonstrated her prowess. The mother of Elisabeth and Stephan Görgl triumphed five times at the Hahnenkamm Races – in the Downhill, Slalom and Combined.

The two Super-G courses will be set in March in the Mausefalle Boden section and lead over the Steilhang, Alte Schneise, Seidlalm and Lärchenschuss sections to the finish line at Oberhausberg. The women’s return to the Streif is, however, a one-off for the time being. From the 2025/2026 season onwards, the women's European Cup is to become a regular fixture on the race calendar at Pass Thurn.
