Fritz Huber Celebrates his Birthday
20.01.2016
Born on the 21st January 1931, the Kitzbühel man celebrated his first major success in his hometown during the 1950 Hahnenkamm Races. He won both the actual Hahnenkamm Downhill as well as the substitute Downhill, came second in the Slalom behind Germany’s Sepp Folger, and was Hahnenkamm champion in the Combined. The Austrian slalom champion of 1953 performed a veritable coup in 1955 while competing at the Kandahar Races in Mürren, Switzerland. He was the fastest to finish the first run of the Downhill with bib number 39 and also won the Slalom. He retired from active racing in 1959 and switched to trainer’s bench. From 1955 he worked for the Swedish national team and later for the Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV) women’s team. During the 1958/59 season, Huber was head coach for the German women’s ski team, which featured an Olympic win in 1960 by Heidi Biebl. From the mid-sixties to 1972 he returned to ÖSV employ, first as youth coach, before becoming head coach for the men’s team. Birthday boy, Fritz Huber, is married and has two children. His 1965 born son, Michael Huber, has been President of Kitzbühel Ski Club since 2009
