Hirscher triumphs on the Ganslernhang

Marcel Hirscher won the Slalom, bringing the 77th Hahnenkamm Races in Kitzbühel to a close. Originally in ninth place, the racer from Salzburg went for gold, now celebrating his second victory in Kitzbühel since 2013, as well as his 42nd World Cup success. Hirscher had a 0.76 second lead on Dave Ryding (GBR), winner of the first run, while Alexander Khoroshilov (+1.11) came third. “I’m speechless, can’t believe that it was enough for a victory. I really didn’t think winning would be possible again this season”, Hirscher jubilated.  Dave Ryding is also extremely happy about his second place. “Marcel Hirscher was unbeatable, but to be on the winner’s podium is a dream come true. I was a little nervous, but I tried to ski as best I could and that’s exactly what I was able to do. It really was fantastic”, said Ryding. Since the beginning of the World-Cup in 1967, no Brit has ever made it to the winner’s podium in Kitzbühel. In fact, the last British athlete to win at the Hahnenkamm Races was Gordon Cleaver, who came first in the 1931 Combined. Marco Schwarz is the second fastest Austrian and came eighth (+1.99). “I’m satisfied with the result. Today we all saw that Marcel is a world class ski racer who constantly pushes his limits and wants to win”, Schwarz explained, congratulating his teammate. Marc Digruber (AUT) fell to 17^th place (+2.76) in the final run and Michael Matt, who was a little under the weather, will have to make do with 25^th place.
