Svindal wins Super-G
22.01.2016
The 76th Hahnenkamm-Races' first speed competition had us on the edge of our seats from start to finish. The first racer, Patrick Schwaiger, was eliminated after missing a gate below the Starthang, only to be followed by another elimination for bib number two. Erik Guay (USA) made the same mistake on the Starthang and was not able to maintain his raceline.
Three Italians took the lead for a short while: Peter Fill, Mattia Casse and Dominik Paris virtually tore through the Super-G. Paris showed us all what a daredevil he is: last year's victor turned too far in the top section, losing six tenths of a second. Half way he risked it all, luckily to his advantage. Andrew Weibrecht was the first to successfully challenge the Italian tripple threat. It looked like the US-American racer might win, but then speed-junky Aksel Lund Svindal raced ahead, beating Weibrecht's time by 0.31 seconds. Second to last top-Group racer was Hannes Reichelt, who also impressed with his run. He was on par with Svindal in the top section, however he lost track of his raceline at the Seidlalm. Barely making the gate in the Traverse, he sped across the finish line in third place.
There's no time to lose, though: the Hahnenkamm-Combined will continue at 16:45 hrs. With 1.9 seconds, Marcel Hirscher is in a promising position. The French racer Alexis Pinturault, only 1.22 seconds behind Aksel Lund Svindal, is the top-favourite.
