100th birthday of the International Ski Federation - The founding day of the FIS on 2 February 1924

02.02.2024

The Kitzbühel Ski Club, as the organiser of the Hahnenkamm Races, together with its organising committee, would like to congratulate the International Ski Federation FIS on its 100th birthday. The founding story: Following the "International Winter Sports Week" in Chamonix from 24.1. to 1.2. in 1924, which was also the first Winter Olympic Games, members of the predecessor organisation ("International Ski Commission") met on the following day, 2 February, to establish the FIS as the "Fédération Internationale de Ski". The founding member organisations were AUT, CZE, FIN, FRA, GBR, HUN, ITA, NOR, POL, ROM, SUI, SWE, USA, YUG.

In addition to a lengthy discussion about the name of this international federation, there was some discussion about maintaining the supremacy of the Scandinavian countries and their Nordic-influenced competitions. Ivar Holmquist from Sweden was elected as the first FIS President, and Carl Nordenson from Sweden became the first Secretary General.

What followed was 100 years of skiing and racing history. The FIS is now entering its next centenary, and the Kitzbühel Ski Club wishes it all the best.
