Mayer triumphs in the Super-G
20.01.2017
Matthias Mayer wins the Super-G and celebrates his fourth World Cup victory, kicking off the 77th Hahnenkamm-Races in Kizbühel. The Austrian athlete triumphs with a fast and direct race line, beating Christof Innerhofer (ITA) by a mere 9 hundredths of a second, as well as Beat Feuz (SUI/+0.44). “Winning in Kitzbühel is a childhood dream. After last year’s crash it’s even more special. I didn't dare to go at full pelt in the races thus far. I raced well today, especially in the bottom section. It was a cool Super-G”, explains the victor, beaming.  Second placed Christof Innerhofer is also very pleased about his return to the podium. “It was amazing! I felt good from start to finish and didn’t think too much, just raced.“ Swiss athlete Beat Feuz is more than happy in third place. “My run was pretty OK, the top third wasn’t perfect but other than that it was good. It’s everyone’s dream to win here, so of course it’s mine as well. Tomorrow’s Downhill won’t be easy, but I’ll give it my all, that’s for sure.” Defeat for Jansrud the favourite Max Franz (AUT) came fifth, missing the winners‘ podium by 15 hundredths of a second. „I made a big mistake entering the Traverse and that messed up my run a bit“, is the Corinthian racer’s analysis. Kjetil Jansrud (NOR), who won three seasons in the Super-G, will have to make do with ninth place. “I made a mistake and it cost me a lot of time. Other than that I actually had a good run. I can’t be happy with it, but that’s alright. It’s just another part of the sport”, says the Norwegian. Hannes Reichelt (AUT) had a bad start and was disqualified shortly before reaching the finish line. “I already messed up the fourth gate. Giving up just isn’t an option, though, so I kept fighting. I thought to myself ‘killer race line’ just before the Zielsprung – unluckily it didn’t work out. I’ll have to do better tomorrow”, explains the 2014 Streif-winner.
